For many people, the word sustainability immediately brings to mind climate change, renewable energy, recycling, carbon emissions and protecting the environment.

These are important.

But sustainability is much bigger than the environment.

Sustainability is also about people.

It is about whether individuals can build meaningful livelihoods, whether businesses can remain productive and competitive, whether young people can develop relevant skills, whether employees can grow, and whether economies can create opportunities that last.

This is where TRIBEST believes it has a meaningful role to play in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sustainability Isn’t Only About Saving the Planet

  • A business cannot be truly sustainable if it is environmentally responsible but cannot develop the people it depends on.
  • An economy cannot thrive sustainably when large numbers of people are unable to access decent work.
  • A company cannot sustain growth if it continuously loses capable employees because it has no strategy for development, engagement or retention.
  • And a young person cannot fully participate in economic growth if they have education but lack the skills, experience or opportunities required to enter the workplace.

These are not simply HR problems.

They are sustainable-development problems.

The Sustainable Development Goals recognize the importance of decent work, inclusive economic growth, quality education, gender equality, reduced inequalities and partnerships.

For TRIBEST, this creates an opportunity to look at sustainability through a different but equally important lens:

People. Productivity. Opportunity.

What Happens When People Cannot Find Decent Work?

Employment is more than receiving a monthly salary. For many people, decent work represents independence, dignity, confidence, stability and the ability to contribute to their families and communities. When people cannot access meaningful employment, the consequences extend beyond the individual.

  • Families may struggle.
  • Skills may remain unused.
  • Businesses lose potential talent.
  • Communities lose productive capacity.

And the economy loses opportunities for growth.

This is why SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth is particularly relevant to TRIBEST.

TRIBEST’s work in recruitment, workforce solutions, training and development, outsourcing and related HR services places the organisation within an ecosystem that connects people with opportunities and businesses with talent.

The goal should not simply be to fill vacancies.

It should be to create better connections between talent and opportunity.

What Happens When Businesses Cannot Find the Skills They Need?

There is another side to the employment conversation.

While millions of people are looking for opportunities, many businesses continue to struggle to find people with the capabilities they need.

This creates a paradox:

People are looking for jobs, while businesses are looking for talent.

How can both be true?

The answer often lies in the gap between available talent and required skills.

Employers may need people who can communicate effectively, analyse information, use technology, solve problems, manage customers, work collaboratively and adapt to change.

A candidate may have a degree but lack some of these practical capabilities.

This is why workforce development matters.

Sustainable employment cannot be built only by creating vacancies.

We also need to develop people who are prepared to succeed in those vacancies.

That connects TRIBEST’s sustainability perspective with SDG 4 – Quality Education, particularly the importance of relevant skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.

EDUCATION opens the door.

SKILLS help people walk through it.

What Happens When Young People Are Educated but Not Employable?

One of the biggest questions facing the future workforce is not simply:

“How many people are educated?”

It is:

“How prepared are people for the world of work?”

The workplace is changing.

Technology is changing.

Artificial intelligence is changing how tasks are performed.

Customer expectations are changing.

Business models are changing.

Consequently, the skills required by employers are also evolving.

Young people entering the workforce therefore need more than academic qualifications.

They need opportunities to develop:

  • Digital skills
  • Communication
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Adaptability
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Industry-specific capabilities

For businesses, this means investing in workforce development.

For individuals, it means embracing continuous learning.

For organisations like TRIBEST, it means helping to strengthen the bridge between talent, skills and opportunity.

What Happens When Women Don’t Have Equal Access to Economic Opportunity?

Sustainability also requires inclusion.

If talented people are excluded from economic opportunities because of gender or other barriers, society loses potential.

Businesses lose talent.

Families lose economic opportunities.

And economies lose productive capacity.

For TRIBEST, supporting equal opportunity means encouraging fair access to employment, professional development and career advancement.

It also means asking difficult questions:

  • Are recruitment processes genuinely inclusive?
  • Are women being given opportunities to progress into leadership?
  • Are organisations creating workplaces where different talents can thrive?

These conversations connect workforce development with SDG 5 – Gender Equality and SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities.

Sustainability should not be about creating opportunities for only a few.

It should be about building systems in which more people can participate and contribute.

What Happens When Companies Constantly Lose Trained Employees?

Now consider the employer’s perspective.

A company recruits an employee.

It invests time and money in onboarding and training.

The employee develops valuable knowledge.

Then, after a relatively short period, the employee leaves.

The company starts again.

Recruit. Train. Replace. Repeat.

Employee turnover is not simply an HR statistic.

It can affect productivity, institutional knowledge, customer relationships, team morale and business continuity.

A sustainable organisation therefore needs to think beyond recruitment.

It needs to think about:

Attract → Hire → Develop → Engage → Retain → Grow

This is why workforce sustainability matters.

The question is not only:

“Can we find good people?”

It is also:

“Can we create an environment where good people can perform, develop and stay?”

What Hiring Trends in 2025 Mean for the Future of Work

As we approach the end of the year, organizations and professionals alike are reflecting on what has changed in the world of work – and what lies ahead. At TRIBEST, our continuous engagement with employers, job seekers, and HR leaders across sectors has made one thing clear: hiring in 2025 is no longer about filling roles; it is about building adaptable, future-ready talent ecosystems.

The hiring landscape has undergone a permanent shift. Remote and hybrid work models are now standard practice, not perks. Artificial Intelligence has moved from experimentation to full integration in HR processes. Employers are rethinking how they attract, assess, and retain talent, while professionals are redefining what meaningful work looks like.

Below are the key hiring trends shaping 2025 and beyond, and what they mean for individuals and organizations.

  1. Remote & Hybrid Work Are Here to Stay

Flexibility has become a non-negotiable priority. Over 70% of professionals now consider work flexibility a major factor when exploring new opportunities. In response, seven out of ten organizations have adopted hybrid or fully remote models.

Many companies are also redesigning physical office spaces to support collaboration rather than daily attendance, signaling a long-term shift in how work is structured.

What this means: Employers must build policies, performance systems, and cultures that support flexibility, while professionals must develop strong communication, self-management, and digital collaboration skills.

2. AI & Automation Are Transforming HR

Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional in recruitment. From candidate sourcing and CV screening to interview scheduling and workforce planning, AI is streamlining HR operations at scale. By 2025, an estimated 60% of organizations will rely on AI across most stages of recruitment.

What this means: Employers must balance efficiency with fairness and human judgment, while candidates must optimize their digital presence – CVs, LinkedIn profiles, and skills portfolios – to align with AI-driven screening systems.

3. Skills-Based Hiring Is Replacing Credential-Based Hiring

Degrees and job titles are losing their dominance. Employers are now prioritizing practical skills, competencies, and real-world experience over formal qualifications. Research shows that skills-based hiring is five times more predictive of job performance than degree-based selection.

What this means: Professionals must focus on continuous learning and skill acquisition, while organizations must rethink job descriptions, assessments, and training frameworks.

4. Data-Driven Recruitment Is the New Standard

HR teams are increasingly using data analytics to forecast talent needs, identify skill gaps, manage labor costs, and align workforce planning with business strategy. Recruitment decisions are becoming more evidence-based and less intuitive.

What this means: Companies that invest in HR data and insights will gain a competitive advantage, while HR professionals must strengthen their analytical and strategic capabilities.

5. Employee Experience & Wellbeing Are Strategic Priorities

Employer branding, workplace culture, and employee well-being now play a major role in attracting and retaining top talent. Organizations are placing greater emphasis on mental health, personalized benefits, flexible policies, and inclusive work environments.

What this means: Talent retention is no longer driven by salary alone. Employees are choosing organizations that align with their values, purpose, and quality of life.

6. Upskilling & Internal Mobility Are Business Imperatives

With rapid technological change – especially AI adoption – organizations are investing more in upskilling and internal mobility rather than constant external hiring. Preparing existing employees for future roles is proving more sustainable and cost-effective.

What this means: Continuous learning is essential for career longevity, and companies that invest in talent development will be better positioned for long-term growth.

A recent TRIBEST LinkedIn poll asked a simple but thought-provoking question:

Which is harder in Nigeria today?

  • Getting a job – 65%
  • Growing a business – 29%
  • Building a career – 6%
  • Keeping a job – 0%

While the results may not be surprising, they reveal deeper realities about Nigeria’s workforce and economic landscape.

The Job Search Challenge

The majority of respondents believe that getting a job is the hardest challenge today. This reflects the experiences of many graduates and professionals navigating a highly competitive labour market.

Every year, thousands of qualified candidates enter the workforce, yet the number of available opportunities often falls short of demand. Beyond qualifications, employers increasingly seek candidates who possess practical skills, adaptability, digital competence, and relevant experience.

This means that securing employment now requires more than a degree – it requires continuous learning and strategic career positioning.

Why Growing a Business Is Also Difficult

Nearly one-third of respondents selected growing a business as the biggest challenge.

Businesses today face multiple pressures:

  • Rising operational costs
  • Economic uncertainty
  • Talent retention challenges
  • Regulatory compliance requirements
  • Changing customer expectations

For many entrepreneurs, starting a business is only the first step. Sustaining growth and profitability is often the real test.

Building a Career Goes Beyond Getting a Job

Interestingly, only a small percentage chose building a career.

Yet career development deserves greater attention. Getting a job may solve an immediate need, but building a sustainable career requires intentional planning, skill development, networking, mentorship, and continuous improvement.

The professionals who thrive are often those who view employment as part of a larger journey rather than a destination.

The Real Question

Perhaps the challenge is not choosing which is harder.

Perhaps the real question is:

How do we better prepare individuals and organizations to succeed despite these challenges?

For job seekers, the answer may lie in developing in-demand skills and increasing employability.

For employers, it may involve investing in workforce development and creating environments where talent can thrive.

For businesses, it means building resilient systems and people-focused strategies that support sustainable growth.

Final Thought

Nigeria’s workforce is filled with talent, ambition, and potential. The challenge before us is not simply creating opportunities – but ensuring people are equipped to seize them when they arise.

At TRIBEST, we remain committed to connecting talent with opportunity, supporting workforce development, and helping organizations build stronger, more productive teams.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing professionals and businesses in Nigeria today? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The post Experience vs Potential: What Should Employers Really Hire For? appeared first on TRIBEST CORPORATE SUPPORT LTD.

]]>

For decades, experience has been the gold standard in recruitment.

Job advertisements routinely ask for 3, 5, or even 10 years of experience. Candidates are screened based on previous roles, achievements, and industry exposure. The assumption is simple: if someone has done it before, they can do it again.

But in today’s rapidly changing workplace, an important question is emerging:

Should organizations hire for experience or potential?

The Case for Experience

Experience brings confidence, familiarity, and proven capability. Experienced professionals often:

  • Require less supervision
  • Understand industry challenges
  • Adapt quickly to familiar tasks
  • Bring lessons learned from previous roles

For critical positions, experience remains invaluable. Organizations need people who can deliver results, make informed decisions, and navigate complex situations.

However, experience alone is no longer enough.

The Rise of Potential

Potential is the ability to learn, adapt, grow, and perform beyond current capabilities. An employee with strong potential may not have years of experience, but they possess:

  • Curiosity
  • Adaptability
  • Problem-solving ability
  • A growth mindset
  • The willingness to learn

In a world where technology, business models, and workforce expectations are constantly evolving, these qualities have become increasingly valuable.

Many of today’s top performers were once individuals who lacked experience but were given an opportunity because someone recognized their potential.

The Recruitment Challenge

One of the biggest challenges facing employers today is balancing immediate needs with long-term growth. Hiring only experienced candidates can:

  • Increase recruitment costs
  • Limit diversity of thought
  • Reduce opportunities for emerging talent

Hiring solely based on potential can:

  • Increase training requirements
  • Extend onboarding periods
  • Create performance risks if development is not supported

The most successful organizations understand that recruitment is not an “either-or” decision.

It is a strategic combination of both.

Building Future-Ready Workforces

Organizations that thrive in the future will be those that can identify and develop potential while leveraging experience effectively.

This means:

  • Hiring experienced professionals for critical expertise
  • Creating pathways for emerging talent
  • Investing in training and development
  • Building succession pipelines
  • Recognizing that today’s learner may become tomorrow’s leader

A Lesson for Job Seekers

For professionals early in their careers, this conversation offers an important reminder.

If you lack experience, focus on demonstrating potential.

Show employers:

  • Your willingness to learn
  • Your ability to solve problems
  • Your adaptability
  • Your initiative
  • Your commitment to growth

While experience may open doors, potential often determines how far you can go once those doors are opened.

The TRIBEST Perspective

At TRIBEST, we believe organizations achieve sustainable success when they combine experienced professionals with high-potential talent.

Experience delivers immediate value.

Potential drives future growth.

The strongest workforce is not built by choosing one over the other – it is built by recognizing the importance of both.

Final Thought

Experience tells us where you’ve been.

Potential tells us where you can go.

The future belongs to organizations that know how to identify, nurture, and balance both.

At TRIBEST, we recently asked a simple question through a poll on LinkedIn:

“If you could improve ONE thing about your professional life right now, what would it be?”

The responses were revealing:

📊 Better work-life balance — 32%

📊 More skills/training — 28%

📊 Better salary — 20%

📊 New job opportunity — 20%

While many might assume salary would come out on top, the poll tells a different story.

The New Workplace Reality

Today’s professionals are looking beyond paychecks.

They want careers that are sustainable, meaningful, and supportive of their overall well-being.

The fact that work-life balance ranked highest suggests that employees are increasingly concerned about burnout, stress, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life.

Organizations that ignore this shift may struggle to attract and retain top talent in the coming years.

Learning Is No Longer Optional

Closely following was skills development and training.

This highlights a growing awareness among professionals that career security today depends on continuous learning.

Technology is changing industries at an unprecedented pace. New skills are emerging, and old ones are becoming obsolete.

Employees are not just asking for jobs – they are asking for opportunities to grow.

Forward-thinking organizations understand that investing in employee development is not an expense; it is a strategic investment in future performance.

Salary Still Matters

Compensation remains important.

However, the results suggest that many professionals are willing to look beyond salary when evaluating career opportunities.

A competitive salary may attract talent, but growth opportunities, workplace culture, and employee well-being often determine whether people stay.

What This Means for Employers

The workplace is evolving. The organizations that will attract and retain the best talent are those that:

✅ Promote healthy work-life balance

✅ Invest in training and development

✅ Offer competitive compensation

✅ Create opportunities for career growth

✅ Build people-centered workplace cultures

The TRIBEST Perspective

People are not just looking for employment, they are looking for environments where they can grow, contribute, learn, and thrive. The future of work belongs to organizations that understand this simple truth:

When people feel supported, developed, and valued, everyone wins.

The future of work is about more than pay. People want growth, balance, and opportunity.

At TRIBEST we work with you to plan a successful work-life balance system for your people.

In a recent poll by TRIBEST, we asked a simple question: “If a company offered you any of the following, which would matter MOST to you?” And we found out that responded voted as follow:

📊 Career Growth — 56%

📊 Better Salary — 19%

📊 Better Work Culture — 16%

📊 Remote Work — 9%

For years, many employers assumed that salary was the primary factor influencing employee attraction and retention. While compensation remains important, our poll suggests that professionals are increasingly looking beyond the paycheck.

Growth Is the New Currency

More than half of respondents selected Career Growth as their top priority.

This reflects a growing shift in the workforce. Professionals want opportunities to learn, advance, take on greater responsibilities, and build meaningful careers. They are not just looking for jobs; they are looking for pathways to long-term success.

Employees are asking:

  • Will I learn here?
  • Will I grow here?
  • Will I have opportunities to advance?
  • Will my contributions be recognized?

Organizations that can answer these questions positively are more likely to attract and retain top talent.

Salary Still Matters – But It’s Not Everything

A competitive salary remains an important consideration. However, the poll indicates that many professionals are willing to consider factors beyond immediate financial rewards.

Increasingly, employees are evaluating the complete employment experience rather than focusing solely on compensation.

Culture and Flexibility Remain Important

The results also highlight the value of a positive workplace culture and flexible work arrangements.

Employees want environments where they feel respected, supported, and empowered to perform at their best.

A strong culture and growth opportunities often work together to create a more engaged and productive workforce.

What This Means for Employers

The message is clear:

Organizations that want to attract exceptional talent should not focus solely on salaries.

They should focus on creating workplaces where people can:

✅ Learn continuously

✅ Develop new skills

✅ Advance professionally

✅ Contribute meaningfully

✅ Build rewarding careers

At TRIBEST, we believe that talent is attracted by opportunity, but it is retained by growth.

The organizations that will lead tomorrow are those that invest in developing their people today.

Because when employees grow, businesses grow too.
